Lakes Entrance Sand Management Programs is a government initiative aimed at keeping the ocean entrance open at Lakes Entrance.

Lakes Entrance is the largest fishing port in Australia, home to a $200 million commercial fishing industry. With recreational boating also worth around $200 million to the local economy, the Lakes Entrance fishing Port is a vital economic asset for provincial Victoria.

The Government has made a major investment of $31.5 million over six years to install and operate a comprehensive sand management system to keep the Port of Lakes Entrance open, navigable and safely operating into the future.

Improvements to sand management at Lakes Entrance is done through the following projects

  • Monitoring Sand Movements, Waves, Tides and Wind
  • Dredge Replacement
  • Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge
  • Sand Bypass System
  • Sand Transfer Station Refit
  • April Hamer Replacement
