Lakes Entrance is an artificial entrance into the Gippsland Lakes on the south-east coast of Victoria. It is the largest permanent inland waterway in Australia. The entrance was created in 1889 when training walls were constructed and a channel created through the barrier dune system. Almost as soon as the entrance had been created, a bar began to form offshore from the entrance. The bar grew rapidly and the entrance became hazardous to the mariners. Despite improvement works carried over the past several years, the entrance is still regarded as dangerous. Lakes Entrance is an important commercial fishing port and, therefore, the entrance bar requires continuous dredging for the safe passage of fishing vessels.
