Archaeological Heritage Impact Assessment Vol. 2 (Historic Heritage)

This report has been prepared for Gippsland Ports and is one of two reports that provide
an assessment of the historical (post-contact European) cultural heritage values of land in
the vicinity of The Entrance at Lakes Entrance; a man-made opening that connects the
Gippsland Lakes to Bass Strait.
The brief for this project specified several tasks and this report responds specifically to
tasks 1, 2b, 5, 6 and 7. In relation to task 1 (which requires a summary of the findings of
previous heritage investigations) this report focuses upon extant above-ground (i.e., nonarchaeological)
historic features, while also discussing the findings in relation to
archaeology. Tasks 3, 4 and 5 in relation to historic archaeology are addressed by
Volume 1, which also considers Aboriginal archaeological heritage values.
It is also understood that a report has also been prepared for cultural values associated
with ‘over-water’ maritime activities and shoreline infrastructure such as shipwrecks,
jetties, piers and breakwaters. This has been addressed by separate consultancy and did
not form part of the tasks included in the study brief for this project.
