The Sand Transfer Station (STS) and associated pipe network has been in operation since 2002 and has proven to be very reliable, however it now requires a refit and upgrade due the additional loads that will be imposed on it under the LESMP trials.
The existing pipe network will also be replaced with new pipes. The network is also to be extended so that dredging can occur further along Reeve Channel to where the CSD Kalimna currently cannot reach.
The Sand Transfer Station has become a critical piece of infrastructure as it will pump the sand from the CSD Kalimna and the Bypass System (at different times). If the Sand Transfer System breaks down all sand pumping from the bypass and the CSD Kalimna must stop.
It is anticipated that the pumps within the STS will be upgraded and duplicated so that downtime can be eliminated and the system can run more efficiently. To facilitate this duplication the Sand Transfer Station building will be extended and improved.
This work is programmed to occur in conjunction with other parts of the trials as each project is implemented. Work has commenced now and will continue to 2009.
