Lakes Entrance on Victoria’s south-east coast is an important commercial and recreational fishing centre at the mouth of the Gippsland Lakes system. The system embraces an interconnected chain of five rivers and four lakes and covers approximately 400 km2. The only access to the ocean is the Lakes Entrance, a man-made opening constructed in 1889 to connect the lakes with Bass Strait.
