Replacing the Side Cast Dredge ‘April Hamer’
Following the successful Pelican Hopper Dredge Trial, the Gippsland Ports Committee of Management is considering options available to replace the ageing April Hamer dredge. While it is recognised a hopper dredge is appropriate to replace the April Hamer, recent research has revealed that building, owning and operating a new hopper dredge may not provide the optimum solution for keeping the entrance open at Lake Entrance. The dredging industry has indicated that due to current orders a new hopper dredge could not be delivered to the Lakes Entrance until late 2011.

Gippsland Ports does not consider this satisfactory to its requirements and is currently exploring other solutions to provide a hopper dredge.
